Signs and Symbols
This project is an exploration of Mexico’s vibrant cultural heritage and the many ways in which its magical rites and rituals continue to color the lives of people today.
Over several excursions to different Mexican territories, from high-spirited Oaxoca, to seaside Zihuatenaho, to remote mountain outposts of the Sierra Madre, I set
out to capture the visual signs and signifiers I encountered along the way.
In the process, I was reminded of the power of art and iconography—from pre-Columbian architecture to religious totems to contemporary street murals, ads and popsicle
stand insignia—to connect us to history, culture, geography and each other.
